Our
Mission
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Peninsula, Inc. has vitally contributed
to children in our community for over 30 years. Founded in 1969,
our unique, non-profit organization maintains a mission to assist
children in achieving their highest potential by providing acceptance,
friendship, and understanding through a positive one-to-one mentoring
relationship with a caring adult.
Our Work
We match boys 6-12 years old and girls 6-15 years old with caring,
adult mentors who share similar interests and personalities. Our
BIGS and LITTLES meet several times each month to do things that
are mutually fun and interesting from baking cookies to playing
basketball.
Our Programs
To meet the different needs of our community, our agency offers
specialized programs:
1. Traditional Program – our signature
program matches children with same-sex mentors who share similar
interests and personalities.
2. School Program – a tutoring
program designed to improve academic performance, social and emotional
growth, and self-esteem in children. The BIG meets with the LITTLE
at his/her school for 1 hour each week during the academic school
year. They may read, study for tests, share stories, play board
games, or eat lunch together.
3. Alpha Phi Alpha Program – a
mentoring program pairing African American males to function as
role models for African American boys.
4. Faith-based Program – a unique
program targeted to match children with local church members in
one-to-one mentoring relationships.
